Strengthening Sri Lanka – IRRI Partnership
The delegation headed by Mr. Sumith Nakandala, Additional Secretary (Bilateral Affairs), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sri Lanka, call on Dr. Matthew Morell, Director General, International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) on 24 October 2018 at IRRI, Los Banos, Philippines.
Discussions were mainly focused on IRRI’s strategic collaboration with Sri Lanka in order to breed better rice varieties to handle climate change, sharing of new technologies, and research experience for future self-sufficiency in rice production of Sri Lanka.
The delegation also visited IRRI’s research facilities; Long Term Continuous Cropping Experiment (LTCCE) and Lloyd Evans Plant Growth Facility.
Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Philippines, Mrs. Aruni Ranaraja, Mr. K.K. Yoganaadan, Director, East Asia and Pacific, and Mrs. Sewwandi De Silva, Second Secretary of the Sri Lankan Embassy, associated with the discussions.
Sri Lanka – IRRI partnership which has spanned more than 50 years and to date there have been a total number of 43 IRRI projects in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka – IRRI collaboration further elevated by the establishment of the country office in Batalagoda, Sri Lanka, February 2018, follow up to the signing of the Host Country Agreement in October 2017 in IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines.
