Sri Lanka Embassy in Philippines celebrated the International Day of  Vesak to promote religious harmony 


The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Manila celebrated the International Day of Vesak on the Full Moon Poya Day on 10th May at the Sri Lanka Residence and subsequently at the Wisdom Park on 13th May.

2 - Perahera

The celebrations on the full moon day included among others a Perahera followed by a religious ceremony of Gilanpasa Pooja, Buddhist sermon, chanting of Pirith by the most Venerable Maha Sanga of FoGuang Shan Mabuhay Temple, Buddha bathing, Aloka Pooja and cultural performances by the Children’s Joy Foundation and Children of FoGuang Shan Mabuhay Temple.


Harmonizing the interreligious faiths to unite for peace, the celebration was represented by the religious leaders and devotees from Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Christian communities living in the Philippines.


Showcasing a glimpse of traditional Vesak Day atmosphere in Sri Lanka, the Staff of the Embassy and their families decorated and illuminated the premises with Buddhist flags, colorful lights and Vesak lanterns.


The Vesak Day “Bakthi Gee” performed by the Embassy Staff and their families, and the Vesak Day “Dansala” was well received by the invitees.


The programme on the 13th of May commenced with Bodhi Pooja to the sacred Bodhi tree (sapling of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi from Anuradhapura) at the Wisdom Park followed by Aloka Pooja, Buddha bathing, Buddha sermon, and cultural performances by the Buddhist devotees in the Philippines including Bakthi Gee performed by the Embassy Staff.

A large number of Buddhist devotees including the Venerable Maha Sanga from the Buddhist Temples in the Philippines, Multi-religious Leaders, Sri Lankan Community and other well-wishers including children in the Philippines participated at both the events.

The commemoration was organized in parallel to the 14th United Nations Day of Vesak and the Global Buddhist Forum under the theme “Buddhist Teachings for Social Justice and Sustainable World Peace”, held in Sri Lanka from 12th-14th May 2017.
