“Sri Lanka Embassy in Manila celebrates 72nd Independence Day”
The 72nd anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence was celebrated in Manila by the Embassy along with the Sri Lanka community residing in the Philippines at the ‘Residence’ on 4th February 2020.
The event commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag and the singing of the National Anthem followed by lighting of the traditional oil lamp by the Ambassador, multi-faith religious dignitaries, and Sri Lankans representing all communities. Two minutes silence was also observed in remembrance of all who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
Multi faith religious observances were conducted in accordance with Buddhist, Hindu, Islam and Christian practices, to invoke blessings for the country and its leaders.
The excerpt of H.E. the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s manifesto was read in Sinhala language while the messages of Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Relations were read out in Tamil and English languages.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Shobini Gunasekera highlighted salient features of the national policy framework of H.E. the President entitled “vistas of prosperity and splendor” and reflected the importance the country attaches on the expat community to work towards achieving the objectives therein to promote Sri Lanka as a knowledge economy with a skilled labour force, smart and competent professionals.
She also highlighted the areas in which bilateral relations between the two countries could be strengthened and requested all Sri Lankans to be a representative of the country in promoting tourism, assisting in forging trade and investment relations and promoting and developing bonds of friendship with the Filipino people.
After the formal ceremony, the guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet of Sri Lankan cuisine including kiribat and sweetmeats.
