“Rediscovering Travel”- Embassy of Sri Lanka in Manila participated at the WTTC Global Summit 2022

Upon the invitation of the Department of Tourism-Philippines, Ambassador Shobini Gunasekera and Embassy officials participated at 2022 World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Summit on 20-22 April 2022. The hybrid event gathered 1,200 local and foreign delegates, including the world’s foremost business leaders, government representatives, and key decision-makers in the tourism industry to tackle the current trends and prevailing issues as well as to share best practices in the revitalization of the industry.

The event was formally launched by Department of Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat and WTTC President and CEO Julia Simpson. The first day of the event focused on the current developments in the tourism industry’s direction towards co-existing with COVID-19 and the way forward towards its recovery. On the other hand, the second day revolved on the topics of sustainability, regenerative travel, and the important role and responsibility of tourism in the communities engaged in the sector.

At the sessions, various industry leaders and stakeholders explored ideas on how the tourism industry could continue to adapt and emerge resiliently from the pandemic particularly in managing post-pandemic barriers, opening economies, latest travel trends, sustainability, regenerative tourism, and seamless travel, among others.

The Embassy took the opportunity to promote Sri Lankan tourism to various stakeholders such as investors, travel agents, among others. In addition, Ambassador Gunasekera, in exchanging ideas with high-level officials of the WTTC, raised the possibility of organizing a similar meeting or summit in Sri Lanka in the future.
