Promotion of Innovative Sri Lankan ICT Solutions for Philippine MSMEs: Courtesy Call on Assistant Secretary Mary Jean Pacheco, Digital Philippines and E-commerce Lead of the Department of Trade and Industry

Ambassador Shobini Gunasekera paid a courtesy call on Assistant Secretary Mary Jean Pacheco, Digital Philippines and E-commerce Lead of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), with the view of promoting Sri Lanka’s ICT capabilities and solutions in line with the agencies’ initiatives in e-commerce development for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Recognizing the valuable contribution of MSMEs in the economies of developing countries like Sri Lanka and the Philippines, she elaborated on the importance of capacitating these enterprises in reaping the benefits of adopting digital solutions to maximize opportunities in the rapidly evolving digital space.

In addition, she also briefed Assistant Secretary Pacheco about Sri Lanka’s interest to introduce its IT software solutions and products to the Philippines in support of its drive towards digitalization.

Assistant Secretary Glenn Peñaranda of the DTI-Foreign Trade Service Corps also attended the discussion. He shared his insights on the current programs of DTI in capacitating MSMEs to maximize the benefits of adopting digital solutions in their businesses. He welcomed the interest of Sri Lanka to work with the Philippines in this sector towards the mutual goal of strengthening bilateral trade and collaboration.

MSMEs account for 99.5% of the total registered businesses in the Philippines contributing significantly to its economic growth and employment generation. These enterprises are starting to recognize the importance of adopting digital solutions in their operations; a development attributed to and accelerated by the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.
