Philippine Economic Briefing – “Six Years of Institutionalizing Game Changing Reforms and Shaping the New Economy: The Philippine Economic Report”

Upon the invitation of the Department of Finance-Philippines, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Philippines Shobini Gunasekera attended the “Philippine Economic Briefing” organized by the agency together with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

The high-level briefing aimed to provide an overview of the Philippine government’s socioeconomic performance, reforms, and efforts towards inclusive growth, prosperity, and economic recovery from the impact of the pandemic under President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

The presentations led by Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Benjamin Diokno elaborated on the hard-won reforms of the government in its zero-to-ten point socioeconomic agenda encompassing peace and order, sound macroeconomic policies, tax reform program, ease of doing business, rural development, human capital development, infrastructure development program, among others.

In addition, the country’s performance on pursuing digitalization, strong revenue collection, foreign direct investments, maintenance of positive credit ratings, infrastructure development program called “Build, Build, Build” and its COVID-19 impact recovery strategy were also highlighted.

Ambassador Gunasekera took the opportunity to speak with prominent cabinet officials and business leaders such as Agriculture Secretary William Dar, Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez, and Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry President George Barcelon, to promote Sri Lanka’s interests and its on-going engagements with the Philippines.
