Mutually-Beneficial Initiatives towards Industry Recovery: Prospective Meeting between the Embassy and the Department of Tourism-Philippines

Ambassador Shobini Gunasekera virtually met with Hon. Benito C. Bengzon, Jr., Undersecretary for Tourism Development of the Department of Tourism -Philippines (DOT), to formally discuss the way forward in implementing the Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism Cooperation between the Sri Lanka and the Philippines signed in 2019 for the development of the industry.

As an initial step towards the convening of the Philippines-Sri Lanka Joint Working Group on Tourism Cooperation in the coming months, both officials committed to extend their full support by coordinating the conceptualization of a work plan and agenda which will serve as the framework of this mutually-beneficial engagement.

Apart from the above initiative, both officials expressed their interest to pursue bilateral promotion activities, sharing of best practices and experience, capability development, and other related collaboration in the sectors of wildlife, nature, cultural and heritage, eco-tourism, community-based tourism, among others, as potential areas for convergence.

The Philippines is an archipelagic nation known for its stunning tropical landscape, rich biodiversity, pristine beaches, unique adventures, and prominent cultural and heritage attractions embodying its centuries-long Western colonial history. The country is a popular tourist destination in the ASEAN region and has reached an industry milestone with a recorded eight million tourist arrivals in the country in 2019.
