Mrs. Gethsie Shanmugam will be honored at the 2017 Ramon Magsaysay Award for her “compassion and courage in working under extreme conditions to rebuild war-scarred lives” in Sri Lanka
Mrs. Gethsie Shanmugam (82), Sri Lankan teacher, has been nominated as one of the six recipients of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for the year 2017, which is regarded as Asia’s premier prize and highest honor, celebrating the greatness of spirit and transformative leadership in Asia.
In electing Gethsie Shanmugam to receive the 2017 Ramon Magsaysay Award, the board of trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation recognizes “her compassion and courage in working under extreme conditions to rebuild war-scarred lives, her tireless efforts over four decades in building Sri Lanka’s capacity for psychosocial support, and her deep, inspiring humanity in caring for women and children, war’s most vulnerable victims.”
The trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation formal ceremonies in Manila, Philippines on August 31st, the birth anniversary of the much-esteemed Philippine President whose ideals inspired the award’s creation in 1957.
