“Kathina Puja” for the first time celebrated in the Philippines
Universal Wisdom Foundation Inc. with the support of the Sri Lankan community celebrated Kathina Puja at the Wisdom Park on 18 November 2018.
This meritorious ceremony was preceded by Ven. Murungagasyaye Gnanissara Nayaka Thero, Chief Priest of Jethavana Vihara, Paris; and the religious ceremonies was conducted by Ven. Prof. Dr. Ittademaliye Indasara Thero, former Deputy Dean of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka and the current visiting lecturer at the Ateneo de Manila University for Pali and Buddhist Studies. Also the Chief Priest of Buddha Vihara Society in Singapore Ven. Kongala Dhammika and Ven. Vitharandeniye Medhananda, Lecturer at the Sambudha Loka Temple, Sri Lanka, graced this auspicious occasion.
This merit making ceremony which was held for the first time in the Philippines was attended by more than 100 Buddhist devotees including the Embassy officials from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Founder and Board of Trustees of the Universal Wisdom Foundation.
Kathina Puja is regarded as an ancient Theravada Buddhist practice providing the Buddhists a good opportunity to maintain and preserve Buddhist tradition as well as to make merit by offering special robes and other necessities to the monks who have maintained strict discipline of restraint during the three-month Vassa or the rainy season.
