In establishing inroads towards more collaborative ventures with the Philippine business sector, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Manila continues to engage with the country’s reputed business support organizations.

On 10 November 2020, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Philippines, Mrs. Shobini Gunasekera, paid a courtesy call on the President of the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands (CCPI), Mr. Jose Luis U. Yulo, Jr, at the chamber’s historic office in the walled city of Intramuros, Manila.

The prospective discussions between Ambassador Gunasekera and Mr. Yulo focused on the chamber’s history, initiatives, its engagements with the government and foreign trade stakeholders, and opportunities for mutually-beneficial trade initiatives with Sri Lanka.

Ambassador Gunasekera discussed on the opportunities for collaboration with Sri Lanka in the sectors of IT-BPM, agriculture, food processing, maritime and logistics, among many others. She invited the CCPI President and his officers, who are all seasoned businessmen as well, to explore viable opportunities for trade with their counterparts in Sri Lanka.

On the other hand, Mr. Yulo expressed his interest to collaborate with Sri Lanka in its noteworthy development initiatives in the Philippines. He also invited the Ambassador to participate in their trade promotion activities to promote awareness on the best products that Sri Lanka offers to its member-companies. In addition, he also announced the chamber’s openness to study the possibility of engaging with their counterparts in Sri Lanka. As a way forward, the Embassy is currently working with the CCPI to identify more potential collaborative activities in the identified industries.

The Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands is recognized as the oldest business chamber and a heritage institution in the country. Tracing its roots to a royal decree promulgated by Queen Maria of Spain during the country’s Spanish colonization, the chamber has been the forefront business organization of the Philippines throughout its history.
