Working on the initiative to expand the market presence of Ceylon tea products in the Philippines, Mrs. Thanuja Dissanayake, Minister/Head of Chancery, met with the management of Glorious Industrial and Development Corporation (GIDC) on 10 March 2021 to discuss their interest to collaborate with reputed Ceylon tea exporters and to explore opportunities for their products in Sri Lanka.
GIDC is recognized as the Philippines’ first organic stevia grower and manufacturer. Their high-quality stevia products ranging from beverages, cosmetics, and personal care products are distributed in leading groceries, drugstores, and retail chains all throughout the country.
During the interactive meeting, Mrs. Dissanayake briefed the company about Ceylon tea’s unique characteristics and health benefits that led to its prominence. She encouraged the company to explore the potential of tea products from reputed Sri Lankan exporters in their current distribution network.
On the other hand, Mrs. Maura De Leon, CEO/President of GIDC, eagerly expressed her interest to work on a mutually-beneficial business engagement with a Ceylon tea brand particularly in developing a range of tea beverages mixed with stevia to cater to the growing popularity of tea among health-conscious Filipinos.
The exploratory business meeting was facilitated by Mr. James Asuelo, Chairman and CEO of Bridging Leaders for Sustainable Development Inc, as one of the identified activities from the discussions during the courtesy call of Ambassador Shobini Gunasekera to the President of the Chamber of Commerce of the Philippine Islands in November 2020.
