“Erabadu Mal Wasanthaya”, Celebration of Sinhala & Tamil New Year in the Philippines
The Sri Lanka Embassy in Manila together with Sri Lankan Students Association in Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation (VMUF) celebrated the Sinhala and Tamil New Year on 08th April 2018, at the VMUF in Pangasinan.
Following the customs and rituals associated with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in Sri Lanka, all enjoyed the “Avurudu Kaama Mesaya” filled with Kiribath and Kavili, the Sri Lankan traditional sweets and delicacies prepared for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year .
The participants also took part enthusiastically in the traditional new year games and festivities, which included placing the eye on the elephant, lime & spoon race, bun eating, tug o’ war and many more other fun filled activities.
Speaking at the occasion, Ambassador Ranaraja wished everyone present a happy and a prosperous New Year and highlighted the significance of the New Year, especially for building friendship, unity and harmony. Ambassador also thanked the President and Management of the VMUF, students, members of the community and well-wishers for being present throughout the day and for their active support and contribution to promote Sri Lanka’s unique traditions and customs in the Philippines .
