“Embracing a New Dawn with Fresh Hopes and Renewed Determination” – Sinhala and Hindu New Year Celebrated at the Embassy

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Manila celebrated the Sinhala and Hindu New Year at the Chancery with the Sri Lankan community in Metro Manila while observing the prevailing health protocols and restrictions on public gatherings as the capital region of the Philippines is still under community quarantine.

The ceremony commenced with the observance of solemn Buddhist rituals followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp. Afterwards, Fr. Maximus Pushpakumara, Resident Priest of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, shared an inspirational message of hope and prayer followed by a blessing.

Ambassador Shobini Gunasekera, in addressing the community, highlighted the importance of observing cherished traditions which embody the unique cultural identity of the country. Speaking about the fresh prospects of the New Year, she enjoined the Sri Lankan community to strive towards their valuable contribution in the country’s holistic recovery from the disruptions of the pandemic.

The celebration was concluded with a sumptuous lunch of Sri Lankan traditional dishes and delicacies.
