“Buddha Rashmi” Vesak Celebrations in Manila


A large number of Buddhist devotees including Venerable Maha Sanga from the Buddhist Temples in the Philippines, Multi-religious Leaders, Sri Lankan Community, students who are following Buddhism in the Philippines and other well-wishers together with the staff of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Manila celebrated the Day of Vesak on 29 April 2018 at the Sri Lanka Residence.

The celebration commenced with the offering of “Gilanpasa Pooja” and Dhamma Sermon delivered by Most Venerable Prof. Ittademaliye Indasara Thero followed by blessings invoked by Venerable Zhi Yi of Fo Guang Shan Mabuhay Temple.

Following the Amisa Pooja, the Sri Lanka Residence was decorated with Buddhist flags and colourful illuminations bringing the Vesak atmosphere to the Philippines.rashmi9

Bhakti Gee, devotional songs dedicated to the Lord Buddha, were presented by the staff and family members of the Sri Lanka Embassy, Sri Lankan students who are studying at the Virgen Milagrosa University (VMUF) in Pangasinan and the Filipino students of the Guang Ming College in Manila.



Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Ranaraja stated that “the Vesak day provides all of us with an opportunity to reflect upon the continuing relevance of the Buddha’s message, as we are confronted with unprecedented challenges in the contemporary global order”. She further highlighted the essence of Buddhist philosophy in terms of peace and non-violence which captured in the Dhammapada.


“Dansala”, an alms giving of food to the people is very unique and can only be found in Sri Lanka, was experienced by the invitees.

The Embassy also supported and participated the Vesak Day celebrations organized by the Fo Guang Shan Mabuhay Temple and Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA), Philippines, and Universal Wisdom Foundation Inc. on 19 May 2018 at the Ayala Malls Cloverleaf, Quezon City, Manila and on 26 May 2018 at the Wisdom Park respectively.
